The garden sketch alone is worth it
This book has so much useful information. We aren't planning on building our own house, being off grid or even entirely self sufficient, but we've always wanted to be able to grow a large percentage of our own food, and this reaches you how to do it in a small space without breaking your back. I've gone from feeling overwhelmed to super excited

An excellent resource for your library
This is a well written book with a lot of helpful information for a broad scope of homesteaders; from the novice (like myself) to the very advanced.
Much like the advertising promises, no matter where you live; the size of your plot; your goals as an independent homesteader; there is more than enough to learn and begin implementing!
Everything is broken down into easy-to-follow steps, with pros and cons, and alternate suggestions adaptable to most situations.
Finally, when you have questions or would like additional information, there is a FB page that the authors will further guide you to success! All-in-all.... an excellent resource for your library, IMHO!! ❤
I loved this overview as I'm in the planning stage
A terrific manual of things to think through when planning out my future homestead. I will need to look up videos on many of these things still when I get to it (aka butchering chickens). But I loved this overview as I'm in the planning stages.
The most beneficial section for me was the garden planning.
A nice book, but a bit oversold. It gives a rather general overview of things to consider if you want to homestead. The most beneficial section for me was the garden planning.
Covers a wide variety of topics with adequate detail
Covers a wide variety of topics with adequate detail. As the authors say, there are books that get into more detail on any one subject. This book is more of a snapshot of the ways in which this couple do or have tried doing things. There are definitely some biases present, but I suppose that's in keeping with the premise of the book.
Written from the personal experiences of the authors
An excellent, clearly-spoken, handbook. Written from the personal experiences of the authors. They have lived in Maine and in the Canadian Saskatchewan, so cold-zoners will indeed get many benefits from this book. But the value is not just in a given zone, because the authors discuss things to consider relevant to just about any zone.
This book proved invaluable
Even though I don't have enough land with the required amount of sunlight to achieve the goal of producing enough for all my produce needs, this book proved invaluable. There is detailed information answering every question that came to mind and I especially benefitted from the section on freezing vegetables. (I just didn't have the space to store canned goods.) This was enhanced by the reference to The National Center for Home Food Preservation. Name the food you want to freeze and there's a dedicated section to get you on your way.
I do like the idea of self-sufficiency
Great book. I don’t ever see myself living off-grid, although I am intrigued by it, but I do like the idea of self-sufficiency. This book has a ton of information on gardening and preserving food that really got me thinking about what I can do and should do with my garden.LikeComment

It's never a negative to have a knowledge bank. Sharing their challenges and their changes as they built and rebuilt again is equally beneficial.
